In April 2020, Chris Black, President of Lux: Design + Manufacturing, visited Heritage Oaks, an assisted living and memory care community in Conroe, TX. Partnering with Greg Roderick, President of Frontier Senior Living, Lux was tasked with revitalizing the distressed community, which had an occupancy of just 48%. Chris led the design team, with Tiffany Tsao assisting in transforming the 50,000 sq. ft. space. The goal was to create a vibrant and welcoming environment that also provided flexibility for multipurpose use.
The design focused on reimagining key areas like the bistro, which was revitalized with custom millwork and updated furnishings. The former library was transformed into a flexible great room, a central hub for various activities such as movie nights, exercise classes, and games. Residents participated in the renovation process by selecting the color palettes for their respective floors, giving them a sense of ownership.
The main lobby was opened up to connect better with the dining areas, encouraging interaction and socialization among residents and staff. Drawing inspiration from luxury hotels in Houston, the design balanced upscale elegance with a comforting, homely atmosphere. Soft natural tones and high-quality finishes created a space where residents felt relaxed and at ease.
Within a year of completion, occupancy soared to 94%, a clear indicator of the success of the transformation. Residents and staff alike praised the enhanced functionality and the renewed vibrancy of the community.
